Samplephonics – Abstract Percussion
Abstract Percussion comprises 234 loops and 217 one shots of cutting-edge percussion that are grouped into three folders of Abstract Beats, Textures and Tuned Percussions in varying tempos (75-175 BPM). If you’re looking to add interesting and unique sounds into your compositions, this sample pack has a wealth of found sounds, tuned percussions and weird objects that were recorded in 44.1kHz/24-bit WAV format. Popular sampler instruments are also supported for further tweaking and flexible playing. Composers will love this sample pack as there are plenty of esoteric sounds such as the Warped and Texture loops for TV, film, trailer and game music. The loops themselves capture the off-kilter genre beautifully, with most of them having that undeniable sonic beauty. The thing I noticed about this collection is that sounds are heavily processed, though, there is still some room for experimentation with the samples. But other than that, I think this library will suit every producer’s esoteric percussion need.
Another cinematic library from Bluezone Corporation, Spectral Line consist of eight separate folders of Ambience, Ambience FX, Ambience Tonal Synth, Impact, Sound Effect, Synth Texture, Transition Pitch and Transition SFX. Each folders feature sounds that are up-to-date and can be used in modern TV, film, game and trailer music. Sometimes abstract sounds are just what you need in adding some sort of drama and suspense in your projects (whether commercial or personal) and this sample pack offers plenty of wide range of styles. The Synths Textures folder houses fifteen gorgeous evolving soundscapes, while the Transition SFX offers energetic transition elements in between track sections. Overall, an awesome collection of 1 GB (139 WAV/AIFF) of royalty-free samples that can be coaxed for countless material.

Mode Audio – Groove Machine
Mode Audio has gone 80s with this collection of vintage synths, retro drums and pop-flavored samples. Groove Machine features 453 files of synths, electric guitar, bass, SFX, drum hits, tail samples and MIDI loops, all inspired by the sounds of the 80’s electro-pop. It includes pretty good elements that will help you produce a complete tune or use them to augment into your other mixes. Like many of Mode Audio’s sample libraries, the synths, basslines and chords are flexible to use because of their key and tempo information. Auditioning the loops in Acid Pro was fun as I liked what I heard. The drum loops sounds fresh, punchy and will definitely lit the dance floor. The synths are the main star in this library, in my opinion, as they sound warm, vibrant and capture that true 80’s vibe. Lastly, Mode Audio has generously provided 80 retro drum hits to help create your own drum kit in your DAW’s drum rack instrument. Once you get past the staring at the cool, vintage (folded CD insert) cover you’ll find that this library has a potential to aid you with your next masterpiece.

Samples from Mars – Modded 707 from Mars
There have been plenty of micro packs popping up lately, and this one from Samples from Mars focuses on a heavily modded Roland TR-707 drum machine. What Samples from Mars did is record a 707 with a custom oscillator. The custom oscillator controls the sample rate of every voice for all sorts of crazy tuning options, and for circuit bending madness. The 707 was further processed through some hardware tubes, recorded in a reel tape machine and with Apogee conversion applied for warmth and punch. The pack is organized into folders individual hits namely; Unpitched, Pitched, Combo Hits and Circuit Bent. You’ll get different sound variations for flexibility and need. These are perfect for producing banging Detroit Techno and Chicago House tunes. How does this sample pack fare with other 707 libraries out there? The samples are well-recorded, programmed well with a nice touch of grit. This is very innovative from the folks at Samples from Mars.

Loopmasters – Tropical Island House
This release from Loopmasters offers a wide of sounds that is geared for Tropical House /EDM music. Tropical Island House was conceived to cater producers and dance musicians looking to augment their mixes with authentic natural-sounding samples with Balearic feel. This collection of sun-kissed samples is divided into several categories of Atmospheres, Bass, Chord, Drum, FX, Music, Single Drum Hits and Vocal. As I was auditioning this pack, I noticed that it features plenty of tasty plucked sounds in the Music Phrase folder. The Chord folder features progression chord loops that are very inspiring. I’m also digging the performances of the flute, steel drum and marimba loops as they sound very organic. At 114 BPM, you’ll find this sample pack suited for lounge, chill and downtempo, but you can bump the speed up for trance or EDM also. In total, you’ll get more than 300 professional loops that can be an instant gratification or something you can play with if you’re stuck with no inspiration. Great uses for this library include just about everything. This is a good library to consider.

Samplephonics – Borchi: Mangled Brass
“Brass” is the name of the game of this horns library from sample developers Samplephonics. This library contains 455 files (24-bit, 630 MB) of re-imagined and re-sampled brass sounds that are modern, hip and cool. At the heart of this library is Borchi, along with his backing band Brass Street Boys, they have delivered one of the best brass loop library I’ve heard since reviewing sample libraries. The loops are undeniably full of Mexican and Latin flavor, but also are infused with house and dancehall vibes. As far as the sound design of the samples goes, they are very well made – all drag-and-drop ready for any DAW. The tuba, trombone, sax, trumpet and full brass section performances are top notch. What’s amazing about this library is the inclusion of drums and percussion loops. The drum loops sound beautiful and clean, and can be used as ‘layer loops’ for EDM compositions. The same thing can be said about the percussion loops. Overall, this is a great collection worthy to be considered.

Black Octopus – Beach Sessions
Beach Sessions offers 5 smooth construction kits in the veins of chill, house and downtempo. Each folder is broken into sub-folders of WAV, One-Shot and MIDI. The title is significantly accurate because the content is brimming with authentic sounds such as chord plucks, drums, cool melodies, percussion and so much more. There are analog synths lines, bass lines, pianos and guitars to round out this massive 848 MB library. Each construction kit folder is labeled with tempo and key information for ease of use and flexibility. Besides the construction kits, there is a folder called Masters showcasing the stems arranged in a complete track. Sound wise; this library is clean, well-recorded and looped superbly with enormous usability. The performance on the percussion loops is great, but the real treat of this library, for me, are the synth phrases. They sound so good that they can be useful little fillers for anything. I like this sample pack even though there are only five construction kits available. With that being said, this is still a ‘go’ for me. Ocean breeze, salty air and sun kissed hair … that’s what Beach Session is all about.

Mode Audio – Escape
Here we have a downtempo sample library offering from Mode Audio. Escape is a 512 MB of “non-stale” sounds that are suitable for producing chill, lounge and downtempo music. The sounds included explore the pretty mellow, chilled, calm and smooth side of electronica. It features 150 Music loops, 104 Tail loops and 90 MIDI loops that you can be molded and shaped into your own to play around. The Tail samples are great to use to end each loops with a natural, rich and smooth decay. The MIDI loops are just as useful to augment into your mixes because of key and tempo flexibility. The drum, bass and chord loops in the Music loop folder are inspiring and sounds great, too. They were programmed with expertise – just as I expected. All in all, these catchy sounds can inspire you, should you be stuck in a rut or ran out of ideas. If you’re looking for some lush and beautiful samples Escape has some good rich sounds. Additionally, this soundware has a nice laid back feel that producers of downtempo should consider.

Samples from Mars – Modded 606 from Mars
Another modded sample pack from Samples from Mars, this time a Roland TR-606. Like the modded TR-707 (reviewed above), Samples From Mars has gone in great lengths to sample and record this beast – all captured using great gear and recorded into a reel tape machine. The modified TR-606 they used in this sample pack has a huge bass boast to the original tom – meaning it sounds monstrous – like a hybrid 808 and 909 kick. Unlike the original, the modded 606 also offers tuned kicks and hi toms, pitched snares, uniquely metallic hi-hats and trashy cymbals. What I like about this library is the variation of samples it offers. At 1.8 GB, you’ll get 1200 of 24-bit samples ready to drop into your productions or use it to create countless drum racks in your DAW/sequencer. How does it sound? It sounds vintage and gritty. It is well recorded with plenty of that 80’s soul. So if you’re looking for that 606 vibe but can’t afford the original, Modded 606 is the best option to get hands on that 606 sound.

Bluezone Corporation – Lost in Space: Sci-Fi Cinematic Samples
Similar to Spectral Line sample library (reviewed above) this sample pack concentrates covering a wide range of sci-fi and futuristic sounds. It is almost as if these sounds were showed to earth from an alien mothership. And that’s a good thing because they sound very innovative and sophisticated. A total of 138 samples in standard 24-bit WAVs, Lost in Space contains loops in which many are primed to inspire. The long, sustained soundscape loops are the ones that I really like in the bunch. And there’s even a low drone that is over a minute long. For easy navigation and auditioning, this pack is broken down into eight categories of Ambience, Ambience FX, Hit, Sequence, Sound Effect, Synth Texture, Transition SFX and Low Drone. Plenty of these sounds will work as “bed” (background) in ambient composition and plenty will work as “fillers” as well. Bottom line, this is a well-conceived sample library that should be considered by cinematic producers.

Famous Audio – Future Memories
Future Memories is another sample library by veteran sound designer Utku-S. This is a cinematic, electronica and downtempo sample pack in which I love its content. Utku-S has made quite a ripple, for lack of better term, in the sample library arena because of his amazing ability for innovative sound design. This 2.27 GB Famous Audio release from him features smooth basses, slo-mo and mangled beats, bright and buzzy synths, lo-fi smooth keys, pulsing sequences, soulful and gritty chords, euphoric plucks, hazy and dusty atmospheric textures, spacey and otherworldly pads and many more. In other words, the 614 loops and one-shots is an all-electronic affair with varying tempos and keys. Intricate, abstract, timeless, deeply mangled and pulsing are the words that come to mind in describing this pack. What I like about this sample pack are the 248 one-shots included. You’ll metallic, glitchy, modular and granular samples. But my favorites, though, are the organic samples in the Organic folder. They are good if you’re looking for sounds with big reverbs and delays. Future Memories has accomplished in representing the sub-genres real well with this library, and Famous Audio has brought a sure winner here.

Samplephonics – Analogue Explorations
Electronic music producers who are into the heavy, rawer side of electronica are in for a treat. Samplephonics have cooked-up some analogue samples in the guise of Analogue Explorations. They have gone into extremes of creating some vintage but cutting-edge loops that will help you inspire for your next masterpiece. Analogue Explorations is an 800MB library comprising one-shots, loops and sample instruments. Synthesizers used to create this unique library were Roland Juno 60 and Korg MS20 processed through a Roland Space Echo and Sherman Filterbank. There are some really good gems contained in this beautiful, lo-fi and noisy-sounding library and they really provide inspiration for producers looking for sonic warmth to add into their productions – especially Techno and House music. The Ballistic Drums are brilliantly programmed – they are so 80s, punchy and would be a good rhythmic foundation to any EDM, House and Techno tracks. My favorite sample folder, however, is the SFX. I wish there were more special effects samples included, though. Overall, this is a nice library that can be a source of inspiration.

Black Octopus – Kulture Neuro Bass
Harsh, metallic and gritty are some of the adjectives I can use to describe Kulture Neuro Bass library. And this release from Black Octopus has plenty of great samples that fits the drum and bass, electro, industrial and dubstep genre. This massive library boasts some 1.2 GB (24-bit WAVs) worth of materials. There are 1160 total sounds that include foleys, granulized bass, growls, atmospheres, melodies, pads, metallic sounds, neuro and reese basses. The varieties of sounds that make up this library are some of the best I’ve auditioned with, especially all the terrorizing granulized bass loops that would be just perfect for dubstep mixes. The grittiness and crunchiness of these basses are excellent. The Metallic folder features some well-programmed, mutated sounds. Like many of Black Octopus’s sample packs the recording, programming and processing of this library is top notch. If you like your music to be in high gear, the aggressive, devastating and furious loops in Kulture Neuro Bass will surely bring your track into the next level.
